There's something depressingly inevitable that, with the 'don't give dogs as Christmas presents' message finally making it through, people are now looking at rabbits and thinking "hmm... they've never said 'don't give rabbits as Easter gifts, so that's probably alright, then'.

So the Scottish SSPCA are now up to their eyes in unwanted rabbits, after people have realised "oh... they shit and eat all year round. That wasn't mentioned at the pet shop."

Presumably we're now going to face a summer of a idiots thinking "so if dogs die in hot cars, it must be okay to leave cats in warm jeeps, otherwise they'd have mentioned that as being a bad idea, too. Worrying times for hedgehogs: apparently, the mild autumn hasn't persuaded them to start hibernation, so they're wandering around in the equivalent of a late-night fug. And you know what they can be like.

A British Hedgehog Preservation Trust spokesman said: "A huge number had to be rescued in late 2005 and this year is looking even worse.

"Hundreds of people are calling to say they have found small hedgehogs struggling to survive."

Never mind dogs, the new challenge to postmen is squirrels. Angry, attacking squirrels.

Barb Dougherty, a 30-year Postal Service employee, said she was attacked and bitten Monday by a squirrel while delivering mail in Oil City, about 75 miles north of Pittsburgh.

"It was a freak thing. It was traumatic," Dougherty told The Derrick newspaper. "I saw it there on the porch, put the mail in the box and turned to walk away and it jumped on me."

The squirrel was shot, so that it could be tested for rabies. They don't have any plans to test the postie in the same way.

Probably a working definition of "killing with kindness" here - people who've attempted to be birdlovers have managed to slaughter the object of their affections. By throwing foodinto the water at Epping Forest's Snaresbrook pond, someone has already accounted for forty ducks, swans and geese. The food went uneaten at first, rotted, and developed a form of avian botulism - which meant that when it was eventually eaten, it was deadly.

Mat Roberts, a forest superintendent, has now asked for people to refrain from feeding the birds. Which would seem to be kinder in the longrun.

McDonalds have redesigned the lid of the McFlurry, making the opening smaller to prevent hedgehogs getting trapped in discarded cups - apparently a too-common occurence. It's far from clear, though, what the point of the white collar on the McFlurry cup actually is, anyway. They could have just stopped putting them on, and saved some plastic as well as some hogs.

South African police have been told to turn up at crime scenes on donkey-back.

The advice, offered by a smiling Charles Nqakula, the country’s embattled Minister of Safety and Security, to a passing-out parade for new recruits, drew immediate criticism.

Mr Nqakula was responding to complaints that because his force was undermanned and underequipped, officers were often slow to reach the scene of a crime. “If you don’t have a car, ride a bicycle or a donkey,” Mr Nqakula told the newly qualified officers at the weekend.

Of course, more senior officers will arrive in those small vehicles designed to look like trains you see further along the promenade at Blackpool.

Barney the dog seemed the right person to keep an eye on a collection of teddy bears loaned to Wookey Hole. They were worth thousands of pounds, and included one owned by Elvis; he was a ferocious guard dog.

What could possibly go wrong?

Barney attacked the bears:

Wookey Hole general manager Daniel Medley told the BBC: "About 100 bears were caught up in this frenzied attack, some were merely little chews, whereas some of them had some quite devastating injuries.

"Heads pulled off, arms, legs here and there, it was a total carnage really. I've never seen such a mess, there was stuffing, fluff and bear bits everywhere."

Maybe they should.

Before she'd allow herself to be photographed with an alligator for the cover of BDay, she insisted they tape the animal's mouth shut. The builders turned up at Knowsley Safari Park to set about building a new baboon house.

Trouble is, the baboons didn't want to move out their old house.

Safari Park general manager David Ross admitted the baboons are not happy about losing their `home, sweet home'.

He said: "The problem with animals is that you can't consult with them and tell them that they'll have new deluxe accommodation within a few weeks.

"We just had to go in and demolish the building to make way for the new structure, although the work was specifically scheduled for high summer when baboons prefer to sleep outside in the trees.

"As soon as they saw what was happening the troop got very agitated and I could hear them barking and chattering all through the night. However, we hope they will settle down and approve of their new `des res', complete with electricity and water, when it is completed in the near future."

Some disturbing evidence from the US that the hysteria-driven SWAT teams seeking out drugs take a pretty cheap view of life:

the image that sticks in your head, as described by John Dougherty in the alternative weekly Phoenix New Times, is that of a puppy trying to escape the fire and a SWAT officer chasing him back into the burning building with puffs from a fire extinguisher. The dog burned to death.

In a massive 1998 raid at a San Francisco housing co-op, cops shot a family dog in front of its family, then dragged it outside and shot it again.

When police in Fremont, California, raided the home of medical marijuana patient Robert Filgo, they shot his pet Akita nine times. Filgo himself was never charged.

Last October police in Alabama raided a home on suspicion of marijuana possession, shot and killed both family dogs, then joked about the kill in front of the family. They seized eight grams of marijuana, equal in weight to a ketchup packet.

In January a cop en route to a drug raid in Tampa, Florida, took a short cut across a neighboring lawn and shot the neighbor’s two pooches on his way.

And last May, an officer in Syracuse, New York, squeezed off several shots at a family dog during a drug raid, one of which ricocheted and struck a 13-year-old boy in the leg. The boy was handcuffed at gunpoint at the time.

To be honest, I'd be happier living in a land where potsmokers could quietly go about their business than I would be one where police shoot animals for kicks.

London Zoo is holding its first gay-themed day, inviting gay celebrities (and, apparently, David Walliams on the grounds that he's camp, so that's near enough), debating homosexuality in the animal kingdom.

Organiser Joanna Green said: "This is a day dedicated to the gay community and hopefully it will go down a storm. It will be fun, educational and, of course, very, very camp.

"A walk through our tropical butterfly tunnel will add a romantic touch to the day. But people can also come face-to-face with African hunting dogs and a giraffe.

"We have 650 species of animal at the zoo, many of which are highly endangered.

"This day is all about celebrating gay culture and encouraging conservation.

"There will be a discussion from gay organisations and wildlife experts, debating homosexuality within the animal kingdom."

We love the way Joanna suddenly realised that talking about butterflies might be considered stereotyping gay people and so she attempted to throw in the least flighty, limp-wristed creatures she could think of, coming up with "a giraffe."

The key feature is that it repells kangaroos - which in turn can help plantlife re-establish itself. A big cat refuge in Serenity Springs, Colorado, is feeling the pinch after its co-owner
had a heart attack and lost his source of income.

This year, the bank foreclosed on the Sculac's 8,000-square-foot home. The couple moved into a small house on the sanctuary's already-paid-for 15 acres.

"We're not going to a homeless shelter, and neither are the cats," Karen Sculac said.

The Sculacs, unlike some big cat refuges, don't insist on the lions and tigers which are rehoused with them coming with their own dowry; so far, they haven't made any public appeals for cash.

This is really just a silly little side-blog I've been thinking about starting for a while as it seems most days there's usually one or two odd animal stories that amuse me enough to send an email to Shawndra while she's at work, and it seems a nice idea to post them to some sort of website as well to build up a collection of them.
